Course Overview

This course teaches youths how to tell meaningful stories through their artwork. Participants will explore visual storytelling techniques like symbolism, composition, and sequencing. By the end, each student will create a piece (or series) that shares a personal or imagined story, fostering both artistic skills and a deeper sense of self-expression.


Course Structure

Duration: 8 weeks (1 session per week, 2 hours per session)
Target Audience: Youth ages 12-18
Materials Needed:

  • Sketchbooks and pencils
  • Acrylic paints, watercolor, or colored pencils
  • Canvas, heavy paper, or illustration boards
  • Collage materials (magazines, fabric, photos, etc.)
  • Fine-tip pens and markers

Weekly Breakdown

Week 1: Introduction to Visual Storytelling

  • Topic: What makes a story compelling?
  • Activities:
    • Discussion: Analyze storytelling in art (e.g., Frida Kahlo, Norman Rockwell, comic art).
    • Icebreaker: Sketch a single object that represents an important moment in their life.

Week 2: Creating Characters and Symbols

  • Topic: Using visual elements to represent people, emotions, or ideas.
  • Activities:
    • Introduce symbols and how they can communicate abstract concepts (e.g., a clock for time).
    • Practice: Sketch a character or symbol that represents themselves or someone they admire.

Week 3: Setting the Scene

  • Topic: Designing a background to enhance the story.
  • Activities:
    • Study how background elements (landscapes, objects, colors) add context.
    • Practice: Create a “scene” that reflects a mood or setting important to their story.

Week 4: Sequencing and Composition

  • Topic: Arranging visuals to guide the viewer through the story.
  • Activities:
    • Explore how placement and size impact storytelling (e.g., focal points).
    • Group activity: Rearrange pre-cut images to create different story flows.
    • Start sketching a draft for their final project.

Week 5: Layers of Meaning

  • Topic: Adding depth to stories through texture and detail.
  • Activities:
    • Experiment with mixed media (collage, paint, linework).
    • Begin layering details into the draft sketches for their final piece.

Week 6: Emotional Impact

  • Topic: Evoking feelings through color, light, and shadow.
  • Activities:
    • Practice shading and color blending to convey emotions.
    • Add emotional touches to their project, focusing on the mood of the story.

Week 7: Refining the Narrative

  • Topic: Polishing the art and ensuring the story is clear.
  • Activities:
    • Peer feedback: Share work-in-progress and discuss interpretations.
    • Revise and refine based on feedback and self-reflection.

Week 8: Final Showcase

  • Topic: Presenting their visual story.
  • Activities:
    • Complete and display final projects in a mini-gallery setup.
    • Share their story verbally alongside their art.
    • Reflection: Write or discuss what the process taught them about storytelling and self-expression.
